The annual cheese rolling races at Cooper's Hill must
rank amongst the strangest of England's weird and wonderful
traditions.
The concept is simple - every year dozens of contestants
gather at the top of a steep hill to chase a seven pound
block of Double Gloucester cheese. Thousands more gather
to witness the event which has been happening every
year for the past 200 years, and possibly longer.
The origins of the event are shrouded in mystery. A
common belief is that the event began as a pagan festival
hundreds of years ago as a celebration of summer. Others
maintain that it relates to age-old fertility rites,
the hope of a prosperous harvest and even as a safeguard
of the Commoner's rights for the people of Cooper's
Hill.
